Yes. Flat roofs can work really well for solar. The panels sit on a frame at an angle, and the roof itself needs a quick check first. Here is what we look at.

We get asked this a lot. Extensions, garages, dormers and garden rooms often have flat roofs. People assume they are no good for solar.

The short answer is yes. A flat roof can be a really good place for solar panels. In some ways it is easier than a pitched roof, because you are not stuck with the direction the roof faces.

Key Takeaways

  • Flat roofs work. Panels go on a frame that tilts them towards the sun.
  • The roof comes first. If the covering is near the end of its life, sort that out before the panels go on.
  • Weight and fixings matter. We check the structure and choose weighted or fixed frames to suit.

How Solar Works On A Flat Roof

On a pitched roof the panels sit flat against the tiles. On a flat roof they sit on a frame. The frame lifts each panel to a gentle angle so it catches more light and lets rain wash it clean.

Because the frame sets the angle, we can face the panels south, or split them east and west to spread your power across the day.

What We Check First

  • The roof covering. Felt, rubber and fibreglass roofs are all fine. But if yours is due for replacement in the next few years, it is better to do it first. Taking panels off later costs time and money.
  • The structure. Many flat roof frames are held down with weights instead of drilling through the roof. That avoids holes, but it adds load. We check the roof can take it.
  • Wind and edges. Panels need to sit back from the edge and be held down properly. We design the layout around that.
  • Shading. Parapet walls, chimneys and the main house can shade a flat roof. Rows of panels can also shade each other, so we space them out.
  • Planning. The rules for flat roofs are a little different from pitched roofs. We check the position for your home before we design anything.

Is It Worth It?

For a lot of homes, yes. A flat extension roof is often the sunniest, least shaded part of the house. It can carry a useful number of panels on its own, or add to panels on the main roof.

Pair it with home battery storage and you can store your daytime power for the evening. You can read more about our solar panel installation.
